And why healing is about more than simply feeling less stressed

Exploring nervous system regulation, somatic healing, emotional resilience, and the Embodied Wisdom Circle. Jenny MacSharry (Somatic Psychotherapist & Intuitive Energy Healer)
Many people come to healing because they want relief, they are seeking relief from anxiety, overwhelm, constantly feeling on edge and from the emotional exhaustion that comes from carrying too much for too long.
Working with the nervous system in therapy helps with all of this as well as something many people don’t realise, healing isn’t just about reducing what feels difficult, it’s also about expanding your capacity for what feels good.
When you have a nervous system that has learned to protect itself from pain, it often ends up protecting itself from joy too and from rest, connection, pleasure and from feeling fully alive.
I know this all too well as I spent so many years almost feeling like I was going through the motions but not feeling fully alive or fully experiencing joy.
What Is Nervous System Capacity?
Nervous system capacity is your ability to stay present with life’s experiences without becoming overwhelmed, shutting down, or disconnecting from yourself.
Think of it as your emotional and physiological “window of tolerance.”
When your nervous system has capacity, you can:
- navigate stress without feeling consumed by it
- experience emotions without becoming overwhelmed
- recover more easily from difficult situations
- feel connected to yourself and others
- enjoy moments of peace, pleasure, and joy
- remain grounded during uncertainty
When capacity is low, even everyday experiences can feel overwhelming.
- A difficult email.
- A disagreement.
- A change of plans.
- A busy week.
- An unexpected emotion and suddenly everything feels like too much.
Many people mistakenly believe this means they are weak, overly sensitive, or somehow failing, but in reality, it often means their nervous system has been carrying far more than it was ever meant to carry alone.
Why Trauma and Chronic Stress Reduce Capacity
The nervous system is designed to protect us. It’s main job is to keep us safe. When we experience prolonged stress, emotional neglect, relational trauma, attachment wounds, burnout, or repeated overwhelm, the body adapts, it becomes protective, hypervigilant and it prepares for danger.
This isn’t a flaw. It’s a survival response.
The problem is that many people become stuck in these protective states long after the original threat has passed.
Over time this can show up as:
- anxiety
- emotional overwhelm
- chronic tension
- people pleasing
- perfectionism
- emotional shutdown
- burnout
- difficulty resting
- feeling disconnected from yourself
- struggling to experience joy
The nervous system begins living in survival mode, and survival mode is not designed for thriving.
The Part That Doesn’t Get Talked About Enough
Much of the conversation around nervous system regulation focuses on calming down, and while learning how to regulate is important, healing goes much deeper than that. The goal is not simply to become less anxious, the goal is to expand your capacity for life and to be able to sit with discomfort without being overwhelmed, receive joy without pushing it away or feeling guilty.
Many people discover that when they begin regulating their nervous systems, they don’t just feel calmer, they begin to feel more alive, more connected, present and more themselves.
Because healing is not only about reducing suffering, it is about increasing your ability to experience life fully.
Why Somatic Healing Matters
Many people have spent years trying to think their way into feeling better.
- Reading books.
- Listening to podcasts.
- Learning about attachment styles.
- Understanding trauma.
- Gaining insight.
And while insight is valuable, healing does not happen through understanding alone.
Trauma, stress, and emotional overwhelm are not only stored cognitively, they are experienced through the body.
This is why body-based approaches can be so powerful, such as:
- somatic practices
- breathwork
- EFT tapping
- nervous system regulation techniques
- embodiment practices
- Reiki healing
- mindful movement
They help create experiences of safety within the body rather than simply understanding safety intellectually and with this the body begins to learn:
“I am safe enough to be here.”
And from that place, change becomes possible.
The Difference Between Survival and Living
Does this relate as I felt this for so many years, I was just functioning. Going to work, looking after others, meeting responsibilities, doing everything I needed to do but underneath, I felt disconnected. I was exhausted emotionally, physically and mentally. I felt like I was unable to fully enjoy the life I had worked so hard to create and this was because my nervous system was operating from protection and survival.
What I want you to know is, the body is still conserving energy for danger that may no longer exist and healing involves gently teaching the nervous system that life is not only something to survive, it is something that can be experienced, enjoyed and received.
